Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta all
came off the bench in the second half but it
was too late for Barcelona, who followed up
La Liga wins to open the season with their first
defeat.
Alaves, who were playing in the third division as
recently as 2013, took the lead in the 39th
minute when Kiko slipped away from Denis
Suarez on the sideline and played in a cross
for Deyverson to fire home ahead of Javier
Mascherano.
Barcelona were level within the first minute of
the second half as Jeremy Mathieu headed
home from a corner, and Messi came on at the
hour mark in pursuit of a winner.
But within four minutes, Mascherano gifted
Alaves the lead again with a mis-hit in the box,
Ibai Gomez pouncing on the error to score.
Barcelona manager Luis Enrique immediately
put on Iniesta and Suarez to try to salvage the
game, but Alaves secured a famous win after
Messi put a shot just wide of the post at the
final whistle.
Cristiano Ronaldo needed just six minutes to get
on the scoresheet as he helped Real Madrid to
a 5-2 win over Osasuna.
The Portugal forward returned to the side after
his summer break after winning Euro 2016 and
slid home from close range to open the scoring.
He then provided a fine scooped assist for
Danilo to double the lead before Sergio Ramos'
fine header ensured they went into the half-time
break three goals up.
Within the hour, Pepe had made it 4-0 and Luka
Modric hit another to finish the game off with a
low shot from outside the box, though Oriol
Riera got one back shortly after and although
Kiko Casilla saved a late penalty, David Garcia
added another consolation before Tano was
sent off.
Atletico Madrid picked up their first win of the
La Liga season, hammering Celta Vigo 4-0.
Coach Diego Simeone had spoken of his
frustration at his side's somewhat slow start to
the campaign, drawing both of their games prior
to this one.
After a goalless first half at the Estadio de
Balaidos it looked as though that record may
continue, but second-half goals from Koke and
Angel Correa, and a brace from Antoine
Griezmann, got the job done in a 4-0 rout.
Las Palmas were within minutes of extending
their 100 per cent start to three matches at
Sevilla but somehow ended up beaten 2-1 after
the hosts launched an incredible late comeback.
The visitors looked on course to record their
most impressive win yet at the Estadio Sanchez
Pizjuan after Tana's excellent 16th-minute
strike.
But Sevilla earned a win they scarcely deserved
after Pablo Sarabia converted a dubiously
awarded penalty, before Carlos Fernandez
scored with the game's final touch, bundling
home following a corner.
Villarreal earned their first win of the new
season at the third attempt as first-half goals
from Jaume Costa and Nicola Sansone steered
them to a 2-0 victory over Malaga at La
Rosaleda.
The visitors were well on top in the game and
got the goal they were looking for after 32
minutes when Rafael Santos Borre's dribble
drew the Malaga defence and when he found
Costa, he had the time and space to score from
close range.
The second goal for the visitors arrived two
minutes before the break as Sansone's first
effort was blocked by Carlos Kameni but he
could do nothing to prevent the Italian tucking
away the rebound.
